Naomi Osaka, the Japanese women's tennis superstar has recently just decided to take a break from tennis after losing in a stunning upset to young Canadian tennis phenom, Leylah Fernandez. Following the 5-7, 7-6 (2), 6-4 loss to Fernandez, Osaka expressed her lack of joy in the sport. Osaka stated, "I feel like for me recently, like, when I win, I don't feel happy," Osaka said. "I feel more like a relief. And then when I lose, I feel very sad. I don't think that's normal." As the tears ran down her face she also stated, "Basically I feel like I'm kind of at this point where I'm trying to figure out what I want to do, and I honestly don't know when I'm going to play my next tennis match," Osaka said. "I think I'm going to take a break from playing for a while."
As the conference ended it left many in the tennis world wondering when or if the four time Grand Slam winner and third ranked women's tennis player will ever come back to the game of tennis. Throughout the match Osaka let her emotions get the best of her and on full display, smashing her racket on the court and at one point throwing it. She was also issued a warning for hitting the ball into the stands and head draped in a towel, leaving the court for a bathroom break after her loss in the second set tiebreaker.during the US Open tournament.
Fernandez on the other hand, in the second consecutive round, staged a remarkable comeback to knock a former champion out of the US Open, with the first being No.16 seed and the 2016 US Open title winner Angelique Kerber of Germany beating her 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-2, one day before her 19th birthday.
She will be advancing to the first Grand Slam quarterfinal of her career, while Osaka will now contemplate her future in the game of tennis.
