King Richard Movie

 

Serena and Venus Williams have been the face of tennis for a very long time and there is a reason behind it.

            The newly released movie King Richard tells the story of the life of the Williams’ sisters. Will Smith plays the main role of Richard Williams, father and coach of both Serena and Venus.

            Both sisters came from a hard background. They were both born in Saginaw, Michigan but grew up in Compton, California. Venus and Serena were trained from an early age by their father. They never had the money to take lessons and join a country club to learn how to play tennis, but their father put in the time at the local tennis courts to ensure that his daughters would be the best players in the future.

            Tennis might not be the first sport one usually thinks of when watching a new sports film. But Venus and Serena have and always will be faces of the sport but also the faces of African American Women who made it big in the world of sports.

            What the movie portrayed so well was just how encouraging the Williams background is. Richard Williams was very adamant about what he wanted his daughters to learn while training at a young age. Richard Williams would work extra shifts to make ends meet. He also did anything to get his daughters the coach they deserved and at no cost.

 

            Will Smith really portrayed the role well because you could see how much he made the role natural. The role didn’t push him out of his comfort zone and as a viewer you could see just how perfectly he fit the role.

            From a young age, Venus Williams showed the potential to be the best from the start of her lessons and after she won multiple junior tournaments, she joined trainer Rick Macci in Florida to become a full-time student.

            Without spoiling the whole film, you see from start to finish tough decisions the whole Williams family had to make. Any sports fan knows how dominant both Venus and Serena would become, but to watch the true story of how they got to where they are now was very beautiful to see on the big screen. It really showed just how any famous athlete can come out of any situation and tough upbringing and become a role model to young athletes around the world. Anyone who has the opportunity to see this film should. It’s showing in theatres and streaming through HBO Max.
