Sabrina Ionescu first player in WNBA history to record 500 PTS, 200, REB, & 200 AST in a season by DJ Hamilton
In just her third WNBA season with the New York Liberty, after being selected first overall in the 2020 WNBA Draft, the 5-foot-11, 25-year-old phenomenon Sabrina Ionescu just stamped her name into the history books by becoming the first WNBA player to ever record 500 points, 200 rebounds and 200 assists in a season. The WNBA has seen some outstanding players grace the floor in its 26 years of existence. No player — not Lisa Leslie, Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird, Cynthia Cooper, and so forth — have accomplished such a feat.
Ionescu has been dazzling us with her play, whether it was recording 16 assists in a game in an 89-69 win over the Phoenix Mercury to become the fourth player to achieve such a feat (in addition to Bird, Courtney Vandersloot, Ticha Penichero), or recording her fourth triple-double of her career against the Las Vegas Aces when she put up 31 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists in a win.
She became the first player in that game to record a 30-point triple-double and tied Candace Parker for four in her career. Ionescu is currently averaging 18 points, 7 rebounds, 6.3 assists, and 1.2 steals per game. She is shooting 42% from the field and 34% from the three. Ionescu is also a brilliant foul shooter, connecting on 92% of her shots at the charity stripe.
As Ionescu continues to improve individually, hopefully, the team's success does too, as the Liberty are just 5th in the Eastern Conference (13-20), out of six teams, with only the Indiana Fever being worse. Can Ionescu become the next face of the WNBA, with legends such as Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi on their way out?
